A federal grand jury in New York has indicted former President Donald Trump on felony charges for mishandling classified documents and scheming to obstruct justice, according to an indictment and statement of facts unsealed Tuesday by prosecutors.
Prosecutors allege that Trump "unlawfully retained national defense information" and "willfully retained classified national defense information" in violation of the Espionage Act. They further allege that Trump and his associates "engaged in efforts to conceal the existence and nature of these documents" and "corruptly obstructed, influenced, and impeded the investigation into the existence and location of these documents."
The indictment provides details of how Trump allegedly mishandled classified documents after leaving office in January 2021. Prosecutors say that Trump took classified documents to his residence at Mar-a-Lago and stored them in an unsecured location.
The indictment also alleges that Trump "repeatedly resisted efforts by the FBI to recover the documents" and "made false and misleading statements to investigators about the documents."
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation politically motivated. He has also said that he declassified the documents that were taken to Mar-a-Lago.
The charges against Trump are serious and could carry significant prison time if he is convicted. The trial is expected to begin in October.
