Freedom To Vote Act 2024

The Freedom to Vote Act: Protecting Our Elections

What the Bill Would Do

The Freedom to Vote Act is a comprehensive piece of legislation that would protect our elections from voter suppression and partisan sabotage. The bill would:
  • Require states to create a permanent early voting list by requiring them to treat an application to vote by mail as valid.
  • Restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated people.
  • Establish a federal holiday for Election Day.
  • Make it easier for people to register to vote.
  • Provide funding for election security.

Why the Bill Is Needed

The Freedom to Vote Act is needed to protect our democracy. In recent years, we have seen a wave of voter suppression laws passed in states across the country. These laws make it harder for people to vote, and they disproportionately impact voters of color. The Freedom to Vote Act would help to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to vote. It would make it easier for people to register to vote, vote early, and vote on Election Day. It would also provide funding for election security to help protect our elections from interference.

What's Next

The Freedom to Vote Act passed the House of Representatives in March of 2021. It is now being considered by the Senate. Senate Democrats have been trying to pass the bill through a process called reconciliation, which would allow them to pass the bill with a simple majority vote. However, Republicans have filibustered the bill, preventing it from coming to a vote. Senate Democrats last-ditch push to face voting rights legislation failed on Wednesday night. It is unclear what will happen to the bill next. However, it is clear that the Freedom to Vote Act is needed to protect our democracy. We must continue to fight for its passage.
