Sarasota County Animal Services to Merge with Sheriff's Office
Operations to be Consolidated Under Unified Leadership
Effective January 1, 2023, the Sarasota County Animal Services division will be integrated into the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office (SCSO). This merger aims to streamline operations and enhance animal welfare services within the county.
The decision, approved by the Sarasota County Commission, was made after a thorough review of both departments' operations and capabilities. The consolidation will allow for a more coordinated and efficient approach to animal control, investigation, and enforcement.
Under the new structure, the SCSO will assume responsibility for all animal services currently provided by the county, including animal adoption, sheltering, and field services. The Animal Services division will be renamed the Sheriff's Office Animal Services Section and will be led by a captain within the Sheriff's Office.
