Irish rally driver Craig Breen killed in Croatia accident

Breen died at a test event for the Croatian round of the world championship

Tributes paid to "one of the most talented drivers of his generation"

Irish World Rally Championship driver Craig Breen has died in an accident at a pre-event test. Breen, 31, was killed instantly last week after his car left the road and hit a fence post. The accident happened during a test event for the Croatian round of the World Rally Championship. Breen was one of Ireland's most promising rally drivers and had competed in the World Rally Championship since 2014. He finished third in the Rally Finland last year and had been tipped as a future world champion. Tributes have been paid to Breen from across the rallying community. World Rally Championship boss Jona Siebel said: "Craig was one of the most talented drivers of his generation and his death is a huge loss to the sport. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time." Irish rally driver Kris Meeke said: "Craig was a great friend and a brilliant driver. He will be sadly missed." Breen's death is a reminder of the dangers of rallying. The sport is one of the most dangerous in the world and there have been a number of fatal accidents in recent years.
